Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
