British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several access tunnels down to the depot... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our security, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military executed what it called a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
